Summer Camp Intern- General Counselor
As a counselor, you will gain a hands-on introduction to the non-profit sector in a social-oriented, informal environment with plenty of time to work with the kids and hone your own culinary skills. This internship is unpaid, but could lead to a paid position within the organization after the term is up. In the meantime, the position will offer you priceless contacts within the culinary world. We also offer letters of recommendation to hard-working counselors that leave a positive impression with the Sprouts’ team. A summer internship with us is a great way to forge both working and personal relationships with chefs, restaurant owners, and prominent ‘movers and shakers’ within the culinary community. On a daily basis, lunch will be included and there will be plenty of opportunities to take home left-over ingredients from classes. (Our way of getting you to cook once you are back at home! (; )
Berkeley Camp Counselor: *All counselors will be assigned a sub-role. See below for possible sub-role positions! Sub-role requests and preferences are considered in the application process! Internship Includes: Lunch with every camp day attended Left-over ingredients at any camp day attended Signed Alice Waters cook book Camp Counselors will work at Sprouts' mobile kitchen set-up on the patio of Whole Foods-Berkeley, in local, East-Bay restaurants and in gardens and local culinary venues in Berkeley and Oakland. This internship consists of 3 phases: Phase 1 (June 1st - June 23rd) The initial phase is a 10-hour work week commitment, with at least 4 of these hours being spent in Sprouts' garden. The focus will be on pre-camp prep, meetings with Sprouts` directors and summer camp manager, as well as miscellaneous errands, baking projects, and ingredient pick-up. Phase 2 (Camp in Session: June 24- July 14th) Camp Counselors will work from 8:15 a.m. - 5:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. On Saturdays and Sundays there will be very light parent and counselor follow-up from the week. Weekend assignments will be maxed at 2 hours, per day. During the week, counselors will be directly involved with the immediate execution of the camps and will facilitate the organization and flow of each day, from parent drop-off to morning exercises to help with each, individual class. As a camp counselor, you will work closely with the other counselors and camp manager. You will also assist the chefs, from getting them settled in to helping them execute their class plan. Counselors will also help transport children via public transportation from various sites. One of your largest responsibilities will be to work closely with the chefs and children to facilitate the day’s itinerary. Set-up and clean-up of the kitchen site is a crucial aspect of this position. This internship will include a wide range of both leadership-oriented tasks to more menial tasks such as cleaning dishes. Attitude, energy, and team-work are key components. Throughout the 3 weeks, counselors will be assigned three camp days off in order to rest. Phase 3 (July 15th - August 1st) This phase will resume a 10-hour-a -week time commitment. This follow-up phase entails post-camp surveys, storage organization, baking thank-you gifts, email follow-ups to parents, meetings, and thank-you packages for chefs and donors including a baked good and a card.
