Laurie Ellen of Tartine Bakery
Laurie Ellen Pellicano is a California transplant hailing from New Jersey. Growing up in a tight-knit Italian-American family, food was both a reason for and excuse to celebrate. Moving to the Bay Area was an integral step in connecting food with its origins. The ritual of cooking and eating began to take on new importance. After graduating from UC Berkeley, Laurie Ellen launched a career in baking and pastry. Arriving at the much loved Tartine Bakery in San Francisco in the summer of 2010 where she crafts croissants, cookies and quiche alongside a team of fabulous bakers. Laurie Ellen has been working with Sprouts! Cooking Club since 2010.
Christy Kovacs, After-School Teacher
Christy Kovacs developed her interest in food education while studying anthropology at UC Berkeley and learning about the intimate relationship that indigenous cultures have with their food sources. She hopes that by teaching kids to cook healthy, sustainable food, we can work towards creating a more conscientious generation of eaters that feel reconnected to the food that nourishes them. After studying holistic cooking at Bauman College, Kovacs teamed up with Small Steps Cooking founder Marirose Piciucco to teach after-school cooking classes, as well as week-long summer camps, to elementary, middle school, and high school students. Kovacs has also been a frequent volunteer cooking instructor for Cooking Matters, a non-profit dedicated to teaching healthy eating habits to low-income families.
Stephanie Linman
Stephanie Linman grew up standing on a stool to see over the counter so she could bake with her grandparents. Her passion for cooking at a young age led her to UC Berkeley to pursue a degree in Nutritional Sciences. Stephanie enjoys working with children and realizes the importance of a healthy balanced diet, but knows that it needs to be fun for kids to enjoy the experience! During her first three years at Berkeley, Stephanie discovered her desire to work with children through an after school tutoring program at a local elementary school. This past fall, working as a Culinary Teacher’s Assistant at Beach Elementary School, in the after school cooking program she broadened her horizons and helped combine her passion for children, cooking, and nutrition.
A Note From a Past Birthday Party Parent!
"Kyra came and led a Sushi Slam party for our 12 year old daughter and her friends. Kyra brought everything she needed, set up, and taught the girls how to make and roll sushi. She really engaged with the girls, taking them through all steps of sushi making. The girls loved it. And I loved it as a parent...an easy and fun party".
