Sprouts Cooking Classes are held year-round throughout the Bay Area. They are open to children from all socio-economic backgrounds ranging from ages 7- 12, and feature a Junior Counselor program for kids 13+. During these classes kids cook hands-on, with real ingredients, side-by-side real chefs, right inside real restaurants. Past classes have been taught by guest chefs from Chez Panisse, The Slanted Door, Pizzaiolo, The Boulevard, Baywolf … and more! ClickHERE to view more details about past classes!
Whole Foods Classes Sprouts holds cooking classes at Whole Foods Markets in the Bay Area, including the Berkeley, Oakland, Potrero Hill, Napa, and Lafayette locations. From caramelizing seasonal peaches with a blowtorch to making homemade ice cream, the classes offer a variety of fun culinary learning experiences. Furthermore, they are led by guest chefs from restaurants such as Tartine Bakery, Des Amis, Citizen Cake, and more! All classes emphasize improvisation and creativity, wholesome foods, and, of course, hands-on cooking. After-School Classes The After-School Cooking Class Series takes place at Beach Elementary School in Piedmont. These classes are available to students attending Beach Elementary School. Local, healthy recipes with an international twist are the primary emphasis of this class series. We use this theme to teach the students the basics about cooking: skills like using a knife properly and blanching vegetables. But, we challenge them too, and incorporate more advanced techniques such as wrapping sushi rolls or crafting homemade empanadas. Out of the Box Cooking Series at The Hub Every Tuesday, the young chefs of Sprouts’ step out of their average schedule and into a kitchen of culinary creativity during the “Out of the Box” cooking class series at the Hub SoMa. Children work together each week to create a meal with one sole inspiration: the weekly delivered CSA box from Albert and Eve Organics (Salinas, CA). Fresh fruits and vegetables are the primary inspiration for each meal. The team of young chefs explores cooking delectable dishes using the locally grown and seasonal produce from the CSA box. The class size promotes effective group collaboration. Furthermore, it allows students to practice cooking skills, learn improvisation techniques, and hone their confidence in the kitchen. In addition to the inimitable culinary experience gained from this series, the children further develop their understanding of community service. From talking to the older Sprouts counselors in the kitchen about service to actually serving the lunch they prepare for the Hub workers, each child learns about and practices reaching out to others in their community. The Seneca Center Once a month, Sprouts reaches out to the emotionally troubled youth of the Seneca Center in San Francisco. A team of volunteers takes the afternoon to spend time with the patients teaching them, hands-on, how to cook wholesome versions of their favorite recipes. This outreach program expands the knowledge of health and hands-on learning to a youth of many different backgrounds and cultures. Furthermore, it allows us to show them how to eat simply, affordably, and health'fully' so that they can be successfully independent once they leave the center. The Seneca Center classes cooking are an excellent opportunity to bridge the gap between slow food and culinary education for a wide diversity of kids. Private Events Sprouts' cooking classes take place in real restaurant kitchens, but do not worry we can come to your kitchen too! Members of the enthusiastic Sprouts Staff teach hands-on cooking classes for birthday parties and other private events. We charge $25 a person and ask for a group minimum of 10 kids. All proceeds go to scholarship events. |
