_Cooking “Out of the Box”
Job Description:
On Tuesdays, culinary instructors will help a small group of children (ages 10-17)
to cook lunch for a group of around 40 entrepreneurs working at the Hub SoMa,
using one sole inspiration: the weekly delivered CSA box from Albert and Eve
Organics (Salinas, CA). Teachers will support the creativity of the aspiring young
cooks focusing on improvisational cooking techniques, all while maintaining quality
control, kitchen safety, and good hygiene practices. Class sizes range from 4-9
children. Other instructor responsibilities include preparing a weekly grocery
list of pantry ingredients for the Hub to purchase for the class. Some experience
in the culinary world is preferred, however not required.
An understanding of seasonal produce and improvisational cooking is very
helpful for the improv-style of the class.
This is an opportunity to make a difference in the community by bridging
the gap between children, the slow food movement, real ingredients, and
community service
Time Commitment:
The series takes place on Tuesdays from 9:40 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.,
with a flexible start date in December to June of 2012. The time of the actual
class is 10AM-12:30 PM.
Compensation:
There will be a two week orientation period, where teachers will attend
two classes to observe, followed by a due diligence volunteer position of
four weeks. After this orientation and volunteer period
is complete, an honorary stipend of $20 per class will be offered.
